Interior Inspiration: Embracing the green

Our homes are a respite from our busy, modern lifestyles, so if you’re looking to create a sanctuary in the city, then blurring the lines between inside and outside is easier than you might think.

Biophilia design is all about emphasising the connection between humankind and nature. It has been splashed across countless interior design magazines and blogs this year as more people embrace incorporating the natural world into the places they live and work in.

The Biophilia trend in your home has also proved to increase wellbeing, creativity and concentration levels.

Get the look in four easy steps . . .

  1. Go nude – Grey has been the neutral of choice for over a decade, but sandy shades are now making a comeback. Create an earthy colour palette consisting of barely there, warm neutrals. Think fleshy tones, oatmeal and muted beige.
  2. Choose your materials – The materials we choose to incorporate into our living space can help us to feel more in touch with the earth. Go for natural, organic materials such as wood, stone and slate, as well as handmade pieces made from rice paper, macramé, jute and clay.
  3. Plants, plants and more plants – What better way to connect to nature than
introducing indoor plants into your home. It’s been scientifically proven that plants make us feel calmer and more relaxed, as well as being great for purifying the air. Add a statement monstera or areca palm, or for something a little smaller, opt for potted succulents on a window sill.
  4. Be sustainable – Public consciousness has turned to helping the planet and the effects of the products we buy. With so many new sustainable brands launching all the time, it couldn’t be easier to reduce your carbon footprint. Veer away from cotton and search for more sustainable natural fabrics, such
as bamboo and modal, and opt for classic furniture designs in natural wood that will stand the test of time, rather than plastic, more disposable styles.
